Foods to Help Prevent Osteoporosis

Because I had to have a hysterectomy at 36 due to Ovarian Cancer, one of the side effects is the risk of developing Osteoporosis at an early age.  Along with having to take extra calcium and vitamin D there are many foods you can eat that will help you get your daily value of calcium.  Here is a list I got from drweil.com of calcium rich foods you can add to your diet:

  1. Low-fat or non-fat dairy products
  2. Canned sardines and canned sockeye salmon
  3. Dark green vegetables such as broccoli, collard greens and bok choy
  4. Tofu
  5. Calcium-fortified juices and carrageenan free soy milk
  6. Black-eyed peas
  7. Blackstrap molasses
  8. Poppy seeds and sesame seeds
  9. Almonds
  10. Figs

Raise Money For Ovarian Cancer

I heard this on GMA this morning: If you log onto the Electrolux site and send a virtual cupcake to a friend, $1.00 will be donated to raise money for Ovarian Cancer. So please log on and help fight this cause. I think you also get entered in a drawing to win a washer and dryer so there is an added bonus. They also have t-shirts for sale where all of the proceeds go to Ovarian Cancer Research. Please take a few minutes to log on and send a few cupcakes to friends or if you don’t want to spam your friends you can send them to me!

How to Burn More Calories After 40

I’m not quite there yet…just over a year before I turn the big 4-0. But because I had a hysterectomy at 36 as part of my ovarian cancer treatment I had what is called surgical menopause, which basically means that I went into surgery well before my menopausal years and came out of it post-menopausal. So how’s that for a body adjustment?

I find that it now takes more work to keep those pounds off and to keep the arms and shoulders looking lean and mean. Now I know we all wish we could have arms like Madonna at 50 but let’s face it…most of us cannot afford a personal trainer and devote a good portion of our days to working out. So I went to the books for tips on how to get the most out of my workouts and how to burn more calories while I am working out and also just at home. Here is what I found:

Swing Your Arms While You Walk: If you bend your elbows at a 90 degree angle and pump your arms while you walk you will burn up to 15% more calories every time you work out. (forget about how you might look - swing 'em hard)

Work Out with Music: It can help you to go up to 20% longer to burn more calories. SometimesI am just about to call it quits and a great tune will rev up my run or make me walk that extra block or two.

Take it Outside: Exercisers burn 10% more calories when walking or running outdoors than they do on a treadmill at the same speed. Even pushing more against the wind or other elements burns more calories too!

Move More all Day: Pace around while you talk on the phone, walk instead of drive, go up and down your stairs, get up and walk around the house a few times between emails. You could burn up to 350 extra calories a day!

Ovarian Cancer, My Health, My Kids

I’m off topic tonight. As I have mentioned before, I am a 2 year cancer survivor. I had the Big “O”. The one they call the silent killer…Ovarian Cancer. My cancer was found during a routine visit to my OB/GYN. Within weeks I had surgery and then went thru 6 months of chemo. For those who have been there – not fun. Thankfully, I am now on the other side of it all – in remission – a survivor. I bring this up not to go into my rant about cancer but for two reasons. One, if you are a woman…never never never skip your yearly exam. No excuses…It saved my life.

My cancer propelled me into a different mind-set about family, faith, health, and obviously, food. Don’t get me wrong, I love to eat! I love food! I just want to be aware of what I am puting into my body and what I am eating. I don’t make it complicated and I don’t fret about what I eat. I just try to be proactive about my health and the health of my family and I try to watch what we put into our bodies.

The second reason I am a little off-topic tonight is that as I was putting my kids to bed I took a moment and just listened to my son explaining something he did at school today. We had our typical hustle and bustle night of dinner, Idol and getting to bed. There was the normal impatience that goes along with parenting. But I stopped, took a breath and listened. Sometimes I forget that we need to do this every day. Take a moment to enjoy your children, your spouse, your loved one. Really take the time to pay attention to what they have to say. Be interested. Listen intently. I mean really listen. Just a few precious moments… it sets the tone for today and builds them up for tomorrow.

Psalm 127:3 Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.

Welcome to my Blog!

I started this blog not because I am an expert in nutrition, diet or exercise but because I am a pushing forty, happily married, cancer surviving, mother of two who just wants to raise a healthy family without having to have a personal chef, trainer or a degree in nutrition. Why should I have to read the label of every single food item I buy for my family? What happened to food just being food?

Two years ago when I found I had cancer, my family and I, who already exercised and ate pretty healthy, really started doing a lot of research on what we were eating. We began to read the labels of everything we bought. The first few weeks of doing this meant for long hours at the grocery store. I found myself exclaiming out loud in the aisles, “I’ve been feeding this to my kids?” It produced a number of wary looks from fellow shoppers. Once I began to get a handle of what products I thought were okay and what to avoid it began to get much easier but what I found shocking is the number of preservatives, hidden trans fat, and over processed foods that are in our diets. Why should there be ten ingredients in butter? Shouldn’t butter just be cream and salt?
So I decided I would start off 2009 with a blog that had great food tips, easy healthy recipes, and information that I could share with others on getting back to a more natural way of eating. I wanted to help others so they would not have to do all the leg work I have done over the last couple of years to put healthy food on my families table.

1 Corinthians 6:19,20 (New Living Translation)
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

The first thing I want to talk about is breakfast. For me, it’s boring. I do not get excited about breakfast at home. It is utilitarian. Although I would prefer a nice big toasted everything bagel with a bunch of cinnamon swirl cream cheese. That’s not what I eat. Six out of seven days a week I eat either cereal or oatmeal with fruit. I know it sounds pretty bland but you can really make it a great start to a super healthy day. Here are a few suggestions:

Kashi Heart to Heart Brown Maple Oatmeal
Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal
Kashi Heart to Heart Cereal

Whatever I choose I always add about a teaspoon of cinnamon to my cereal, ground flax seed (I’ll tell you why next), and fruit – usually blueberries or sliced bananas. To make the cold cereal even better I use light vanilla soy milk. I know it may sound strange but it is so good. I like it so much that I never use regular milk anymore. If you don’t like the extra vanilla flavoring than just get regular light soy milk. My favorite brand is Light Silk Soymilk. It’s all natural.

The reason I usually choose Kashi brand cereals or oatmeal is that I know I can trust that their products are going to be all natural. I don’t have to read the list of ingredients before buying their products – I have found from my research and reading the labels of many different brands of cereal that they consistently use all natural ingredients. Here’s their website if you want to look at the products they sell.

I also want to add that I do not work for anybody or get anything for mentioning products. I am just simply sharing my opinion about products I love. As I mentioned, I have spent a lot of time reading labels and just want to share the information I have found so that I can help others get back to more natural way of eating.
